Long before this case, Phoenix Ugrilla had an established history in music, broadcasting, business, community service, and civic involvement throughout Colorado Springs. His community relationships and partnerships extended across public agencies, elected public officials, and civic organizations, which include but are not limited to members of the Fourth Judicial District Attorney’s Office, the Colorado Springs Police Department, and the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office.
In 2023, a separate federal investigation arose involving communications connected to the Colorado Springs mayoral election. That matter was separate from the 2019 killing of William Underwood. The campaign also maintains that another critical part of this history must be examined. Phoenix, members of his family, and individuals affiliated with their broadcasting network publicly raised concerns about what they described as unlawful law enforcement practices, including searches, seizures, and raids involving property and places of employment. According to this campaign, arrests and prosecutions in other matters followed that public whistleblowing. Phoenix was not arrested in connection with the 2019 death of William Underwood until March 2024.
At trial, Phoenix represented himself after what he described as a Hobson’s choice concerning his right to counsel. His case proceeded amid constitutional and procedural issues that have yet to receive meaningful appellate review.
The campaign contends that the prosecution presented no evidence connecting Phoenix to the murder of William Underwood other than his relationship with Aeeshawn Matthews. Matthews, the alleged principal, was found not guilty of the murder of William Underwood. The campaign asserts that communications cited did not concern the Underwood murder. Based on that record, the campaign asks how a conviction under a complicity theory can be sustained under those circumstances.
An urgent call for review. Phoenix Ugrilla is serving life without the possibility of parole plus 96 years. His case demands immediate, meaningful review. A sentence of this magnitude requires the most careful examination of whether the convictions supporting it can lawfully stand.
